SAM BARRETT, DAVID BROAD & LEWIS PUGH
“At times evoking the spirit of The Notting Hillbillies, these lads are the real deal” – Sidney Barraclough, York Times
The three Leeds and West Yorkshire based singers met through the acoustic scene of the early 2000s, in folk clubs, sessions and house parties, including the backroom of Leeds’ legendary Grove Inn. United by their love of folk, blues and country music, Barrett, Broad and Pugh have put together a show of exceptional talent, variety and originality. Featuring songs written by all three musicians with a few traditional numbers for good measure.
David Broad brings outstanding skills in finger-picking country blues guitar, evoking the mastery of local legend Steve Phillips, and songs that echo Big Bill Broonzy, Dylan and Blind Boy Fuller. Lewis Pugh, raised in a family of bluegrass players, writes powerful narrative songs that tell of the real life struggles of working class people, and Sam writes songs of lovers, outlaws and outsiders, rooted both in Yorkshire traditional music and classic country.
