Here's lyric video 4 off the new record ‘HERETICS & HERITAGE’
Anna Maria Haslam (née Fisher; 6 April 1829 – 28 November 1922) was a suffragist and a major figure in the 19th and early 20th century women's movement in Ireland. She also happens to be a relative of mine.
I adored reading this book so I wrote a song attempting to condense the story into a few verses. I missed tonnes of details out - the song would have been 15 minutes long!
Sometimes a song arrives almost fully formed after inspiration strikes.
'Big Stone Lifter' is one of them. Inspired by a Blindboy podcast interview with an Irish fella called David Keohan. As well as being top crack and a great musician, David lifts massive stones. There are many reasons why, but one of them is to resurrect and preserve ancient pre-Christian folklore & traditions. It's a tradition almost wiped out by the many famines in Ireland.
In my mind, it immediately needed to be a bluegrass song.
I've a some gigs coming up with my good friends Sam & Dave. We play two sets: the 1st set is all three of us individually singing our own songs, and maybe a trad one or two, and then the 2nd set is all three of us together. Expect folk, country, blues a little bluegrass & skiffle and a very good time!
